Angry Bird Cupcakes

BakeI found these little guys on The Crafting Chicks website and couldn’t resist making them for a friends son’s 6th birthday.  He is an ultimate Angry Birds fan!  I have to say, they look easier to make than they really were.  Overall, the decorating took about 2 hours and I struggled with my red bird because the icing was too soft and kept drooping off the side of the cupcake with the decorations on.  Next time I do something like this, I will use Wilton’s ready made icing instead of store bought white icing….I think it may take the gel food coloring better and not be so soft/runny.

But, all that didn’t matter in the 5 minutes it took for the 25 kids to eat up each of their favorite character and ask for another.  My favorite cupcake was the pig, that little guy came out the best.  The other birds looked more like Ernie and Burt from Sesame Street rather than angry birds, however kids are very forgiving.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Cupcakes
  • White icing (store bought or homemade)
  • Sprinkles (colors based on bird colors)
  • Gel food coloring
  • Large marshmallows
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Black shoestring licorice
  • Mike & Ike’s candy
  • Orange Slices jelly candies
  • Mini chocolate chips

How To:

(check out  The Crafting Chicks for detailed directions and photos)

  • Bake and cool your cupcakes.
  • Separate and tint your icing into different colors based on the birds you are making.
  • Ice you cupcake and dunk the cupcake into the coordinating sprinkle color.
  • Add the white belly to the bird by cutting a large marshmallow into thirds.  I used the top and the bottom of the marshmallows for the bellies, and ate the center cut since it was sticky on both sides.
  • I cut the orange slices into thirds and then sliced them in half width-wise because I felt they were to thick.
  • For the eyes, I cut mini marshmallows in half and stuck a mini chocolate chip into each.
  • Cut the shoestring black licorice for the angry eyebrows.  That is where mine started looking like Burt and Ernie.
  • Top off the head with that coordinating color of Mike & Ike’s to make head feathers.
  • For the pigs, cut a large marshmallow in half and frost it with green icing.  Stick it in the middle of the green cupcake and sprinkle green sprinkles on it.  Proceed with the small marshmallows for teeth and eyes or give him a red tongue.
  • For the mini blue birds, I used Starbursts for the beak and molded it into a triangular shape.
  • The yellow birds were made in triangle silicone baking cups, hence no cupcake liner there.  The kids were extremely impressed with it being a triangle since that is the shape the yellow bird is.  See, I told you kids are forgiving!
